Note from Sensei

The relationship of a Sensei to the dojo is very difficult to define, as it encompasses many varying aspects of life. The Sensei must flow through the students in many different levels of communication and reach to the far corners of the student’s life. A Sensei is sometimes a father and also at times, even a mother; an adviser and chastiser. A Sensei, though different, is the same as everyone else. He is human in a controlled way and deserves respect for he has travelled long upon the Do(way).

A Sensei should be a good teacher by conveying at the correct time the appropriate knowledge in the best way and manner to the student and must be able to see the students and their problems as they never can-impartially. A Sensei shows no favour, indeed as progression is attained, he becomes harder on those that have progressed. He is kind but firm to beginners on the path.

A Sensei advises, in an appropriate manner, in the inner spiritual aspects of the art and always a friendly ear, who listens properly as they tend to categorise him into either a teacher or friend. He is neither but yet both and more. He sees a student in a free way, unmoved by external face or appearance and he helps in the best way befitting a student. If this is to be hard, he is so, if it is to be soft then he is so. But always it is in the best manner for the students, for the Sensei’s heart is forever with them.

Often a Sensei may test his student by taking views dramatically opposed to theirs and then study their reactions.

Silence is often the best form of praise that a Sensei will give to his students. He will note what affects the students both in and out of the dojo, how he acts to his friends, his family, his work and will act upon the student accordingly.

The Sensei will put forth untruths to see if they are accepted, say nothing when he should speak volumes. He is king when there is no apparent reason. He may be a tyrant or compassionate, but through all these externals, his heart is still for them. He listens when they speak but can see the inner reasons for their speech; he is unmoved but can move. The Sensei is forever active, even in a subdued way. He gives while others take and asks no rewards save proficiency of mind and body. He is sad, sometimes happy, let down and often abused, but forever holds to the way, for that is his life. Though outsides may change, the Sensei does not, though he can adapt at will completely, the inward ideals and principles are always there. He persists when there is no apparent reason. That is why he is a Sensei. On the average, it takes 2,000 students to produce one worthwhile Sensei. If you have one take care of him.

July 2007  Vol 1  Issue 3

Note from Sensei

This month marks the beginning of next six months of this year. Take this opportunity to revisit or check on the progress of your goals. During the month of July, school is out and we have a 12 hour seminar happening at the dojo. This seminar is open to all parents and non-student, especially the Tai chi, Chi Kung and of course “the secret” which will be reveal to you. Clear your day timers and calendars so that you can make every effort to attend this super seminar. Various topics will be offered and there will be something for everyone. You won’t want to miss this seminar!!!!

Use this month as a check point or tune-up month and get involved with the events here at the dojo. Be known as a person of action, and not a person who sits on the fence waiting for things to happen. Just think that if you do not have any goals of your own, then you will be following the goals set by others.

Quote

Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.

Training Tip

Whenever a technique is thrown, make a conscious effort to root in your stances. In all stances, both feet should be flat on the ground and you should feel very stable and comfortable. For example, your centre of gravity should be within the centre of your stances. In your transition to the next move, always root in your stances and then execute the technique, if not you will feel off balance and then the technique will have no power.

To generate more power, visualise that power travels upward and that it is first rooted in the feet, then developed by the legs and then directed by the hips.

3 poisons of life

3 necessities of life

On June 9 and 10, the lion dance team and several karate students participated in the Guelph Dragon Boat Festival held at the Guelph Lake. Many thanks to those who came down and help out in this event, especially the parents of the Karate students. Without their help this could not be a success.

The lion Dance team performed the opening ceremonies for the Dragon Boat Festival, followed by Karate and Kung Fu demonstrations, which was spectacular to watch.

On Sunday we were treated to several Chi Kung demonstrations. You had to be there to appreciate these fabulous demonstrations. Thank you once again, Guelph team for such a display of team effort.

On June 28, Emerson displayed his Lion dance talent to the many parents and students of the Kortright Hills Public School. Thanks to the help of Josh Downer and Sensei Kevin.
